July Female Member Spotlight - Kellyn Baysinger

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started CrossFitting when I was living in Sedalia, MO for my first job after college. It wasn’t my favorite place in the world, so I would go to a local gym to burn off some of my boredom and honest dislike for my job. I was on the treadmill one day and this hulking bald dude came up to me and said, “I’ve been watching you, and you aren’t going to run today.” Instead, he ushered me into a class that happened to be CrossFit. I got hooked and when I moved, I started at 913. That was almost FOUR years ago and I haven’t looked back since! What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?FAVORITE: GraceLEAST FAVORITE: That “active recovery” 5K we just did. That sucked. What is your favorite/least favorite movement?LOVE: Snatches.HATE: Assault Bike. Those things can die.Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)I work for an ad agency is a content strategist and have been with my company for over three years. If I’m not at work or the gym, I’m probably out with friends finding fun places all over the city. I love trying new restaurants, bars, coffee shops, etc.

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?I would get on a treadmill and run a mile (which seems absurd now because everyone knows I HATE running), then move into the weight room and use some weight machines. It was routine, boring and I honestly just went through the motions. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?

  1. Holy crap, I think I just died a little.
  2. Holy crap, that was awesome. I’m doing that again.

What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals? My initial goal was to just be generally fitter and stronger. I achieved that goal tenfold! I also remember wanting to be able to graduate from the 10 pound plates on all my lifts, which has definitely happened! It’s fun to look back and see how far I’ve come.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?I’ve made an awesome group of friends who I hang out with outside the gym (work hard, play hard right?). I also am much more aware of my diet these days. Without CrossFit I would have never heard of/let alone talked myself into the RP diet.Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?Breaking 200 on my back squat was great, as well as my first muscle up. There is video evidence of both. The back squat was pretty. The muscle up, not so much…What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?

  1. Check your ego at the door. We all look like fools in the gym sometimes, just embrace your inner dork!
  2. You may not lift as much as the person beside you, and that’s ok. Everyone at the gym had to start somewhere, and we have been where you are. Just keep coming in and doing YOUR best.

Something you might not know about me is?I never stop talking, so everyone probably knows a lot about me.If I had to choose though, it’s that I’m a HUGE bookworm. My dream home has a library in it, complete with the rolling ladder Beauty and the Beast style.
