October Male Athlete Spotlight - Chris Clifford

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started? I started CrossFit August 26, 2018. TJ and Jessie are definitely the “who” that got me thinking about CrossFit as a way to change my life. The “what” is realizing how deeply my poor health and weight were affecting my life negatively. I’ve come to realize the importance of exercise for not just physical, but mental health. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD? I think I did my least favorite WOD today actually. It was just a 10-minute EMOM with 1) 20 Ball Cleans & 2) 10 Overhead Squats. It’s the not being able to come close to completing 20 ball cleans after the first round that had me frustrated on this. My Favorite WOD? I think Murph because that is the one that I saw early on and thought, how is that even possible? I recently completed Murph for the first time in my CrossFit journey, and there was an extra sense of accomplishment and accompanying pride that I felt at the end. What is your favorite/least favorite movement? I really like the complexity and nuance to the Olympic lifts. If I have to choose a favorite, I would say I like Snatch the best. Least Favorite is tough because there are so many things I can’t quite do yet, but there was one movement that I had an angry visceral reaction to...Triple Unders, I mean WTF... I didn’t even know that was a thing outside of some competitive jumprope situation

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.) I’m married to Jessie’s big Sister Lindsey. We have a blended family of three kids ages 18, 17, 11. Lindsey and I love to travel, and we have made that a priority in our lives. The kid's activities with sports and theater keep us pretty busy. I’m having a lot of fun being a first-time coach for our youngest’s baseball team. What was your workout routine before CrossFit? I was in the Marines 20 years ago.....not much sinceWhat did you think after your first CrossFit workout? I remember thinking if I die now, will I get credit for trying to do something healthy, or be considered a fool for trying it. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals? I wanted to lose a lot of weight, and I have. I am hoping I can finish losing the excess in year 2.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym? The last couple years due to inactivity, I had lost feeling like I was still strong and physically capable. Like I couldn’t have just ran out back and hopped the fence if I had to. CrossFit has helped me turned back the clock on my capabilities and regain those things. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913? First and foremost, JUST SHOW UP. 4-6 days a week just get there and survive the hour.
