October Female Athlete Spotlight - Valerie Clary

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started? I first discovered CrossFit in 2014. I was living in Oklahoma City and was exercising but getting really bored. A friend invited me to a class, I loved it and I signed up the next day. After about 6 months I had an unfortunate running injury resulting in knee surgery and some time off. Then after moving to KC and trying out a few other gyms, I found 913 in January of this year. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD? My favorite WOD is anything with cleans, rowing or wallballs! My least favorite is anything with a jerk or snatch. What is your favorite/least favorite movement? My favorite movement is a clean. Least favorite are snatches.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.) The last few years of my life have been a bit of a rollercoaster! In March 2015, my husband Zach and I learned that we would be moving to Kansas City. In April we got married, Zach graduated from Medical School, and we packed up our stuff and moved to KC. We both started new jobs in July and bought our first home in August. Andddddd just in case that wasn’t enough, on our first wedding anniversary we found out that I was pregnant! In October we had a baby boy, who is now almost two and keeps us laughing and moving constantly! I work fulltime managing corporate travel downtown and Brentley goes to “school” downtown which he loves. We ride the streetcar every day and his new favorite word is Starbucks. Zach and I still laugh at how two kids from a little, rural town in Oklahoma are raising such a city boy. What was your workout routine before CrossFit? Before CrossFit I ran and tried about any fitness class that was available on groupon. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout? I remember being totally embarrassed because at that time I thought I was in pretty good shape. I was wrong! It was July, we did a medball carry run up a hill…. It was ugly. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals? When I started at 913 in January my goals were to get heathy, strong and lose the baby weight which had hung around for over a year. I still have room for progress in all three areas but I feel as good as I have in a long time. Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym? CrossFit has positively changed my life in many ways but practically its really nice to be able to carry all my groceries up the stairs in one trip.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?I will forever cherish the 7:30 pm Mommas and the support they give me during the week. It’s truly uplifting and I look forward to my nightly workouts. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913? I would tell them to check their ego at the door! It doesn’t matter how good of shape you think your’re in, CrossFit is hard and can feel so awkward. Just keep coming back and it will get better! Something you might not know about me is? I love to quilt! I have been sewing since I was 4.
