September Male Athlete Spotlight - Ryan Cleous

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started? I started doing CrossFit September 2018. Some of my friends from Springfield had been doing it and loved it. I was driving down Metcalf and saw everyone running so I pulled in and signed up.What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?Murph was my favorite WOD so far and my least favorite was Seebass at the Warhorse games. I still haven’t figured out the kipping pull up so Kevin and I struggled with the synchro pullups. What is your favorite/least favorite movement? My favorite movement is cling and jerks. My least favorite is a three way tie between burpees, double unders, and pullups.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)I was born and raised outside of Springfield Missouri where I grew up wrestling, playing football and baseball. I went to state in all three and we won state in football my senior year. I then went to the University of Arkansas and got my degree in Kinesiology - applied exercise science. Now I am getting my Doctorate in Chiropractic at Cleveland Chiropractic College. What was your workout routine before CrossFit?I had always loved going to the gym growing up and mostly did typical strength and conditioning workouts. When college got busy I stopped going as much and eventually got to the point where it had been two months since I had been in the gym at all.

What did you think after your first CrossFit workout? After I realized I wasn't going to actually die, I knew that I had found the right place to get me motivated to be in the gym again. It reminded me of a wrestling practice where you can push yourself past your comfort point and know you got better that day. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals? My goal was to lose weight I had gotten up to 250 lbs and was not happy with my health. I had started going to the school gym before I joined and lost a few pounds, but the biggest change came after I joined. I am happy to say I am now down 50 lbs and achieved my goal.Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Definitely. I have more energy to do things like volleyball and golfing. It also helps me decompress and relieve some of the stress from life and school.

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?Competing in the Warhorse games with Kevin was one of the coolest things I’ve done with CrossFit.What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Just keep showing up it gets a little easier every day.Something you might not know about me is?I will be able to start seeing patients at the Cleveland Clinic starting mid September. So, if you're looking for help with those aches and pains from CrossFit come see me and I'll help you out!
