November Female Athlete Spotlight - Lacey Gruenebaum

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started? I have always been into sports and fitness and always wanted to try new things. I bought a Group On when we lived in Columbus and it all began after only one class. I was hooked immediately. I signed up right then and there. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD? Murph. I love the significance of the WOD and the challenge it provides. Even when I was pregnant I had to do it. A very scaled version that is.I do not however, like ripped hands so it’s on the “least” list as well. What is your favorite/least favorite movement?Deadlifts are my jam. Love them! I despise overhead squats. Probably because I am terrible at them!Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.) Well I don’t think I need to introduce my family too much as I know my husband, Andy has made an impression on most of you at the gym. Good or bad. Well, you’ve met him. We have two year old son Gibson, who we adore and love taking to sports games or anywhere else he might think is fun. We love Kansas City sports and or course are soccer fans!I work full time at a Cinema Marketing company. We provide all in lobby theatre marketing for any film. Anything that promotes a film both static or digitally in a theatre lobby is something we have our hands on. My territory is from Kansas City to the Atlantic Ocean so my travels take me all over the east portion of our country!

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?I trained with a pretty bad ass trainer in group classes. She was and still is a natural body builder and has a gym in town. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?I thought “That kicked my ass and I loved it!”What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals? Most of the gymnastics moves take time and dedication to learn. I am still working on most of them, but I have come such a long way. I am also super focused on form. I like doing everything right. I figure if my form is good, I will eventually hit the weight.Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Yes! Functional movement is best when applying it to everyday life. I have also changed my diet since I started. Of course, you can’t discount the community and friends we have made at every gym we have been with. This 913 family has evolved so much in the 4 years we have been here and it’s the best!

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?I have only been to two competitions, but those gave me such a sense of accomplishment. To even be able to compete at any level gives me such a sense of pride! What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?It takes time. You won’t get anything over night. Just keep coming consistently and you will see progress. Work on your weaknesses and they will improve. It will be slow but it will happen.Something you might not know about me is?I have a weird obsession with visiting aquariums anywhere I go, but I will not swim in an ocean because well, Shark week.
