November Male Athlete Spotlight - Jim King

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?Brookside CrossFit opened about a mile from my home in January, 2014. My sister has done CrossFit for years, so I thought I’d give it a try. I really like that CrossFit gives you a different workout every day. I’ve been at CF913 since July, 2015.What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?Favorite WOD is any workout that you have to grind out for 20-25 minutes. Least favorite are sprint workouts. The WOD I came up with for my 50th birthday was Grace followed by 1000 m row, followed by Grace again, then 1 mile run, and finished with 1 burpee and 1 pullup. Feel free to steal that one Anthony. What is your favorite/least favorite movement?Well, of course my favorite is the bench press. Classic CrossFit movement, right? I like Power Cleans, even though I can’t put that much weight up. I detest burpees, pullups, box jumps and any other movement that requires me to haul my carcass up and down.Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)I have been married to my beautiful wife Candace for 16+ years. I skipped the first marriage and went straight for the trophy wife. We have 2 beautiful daughters, Bella and Brooke, who are 8 and 7. As a Wealth Management Advisor with Northwestern Mutual for 21+ years, I help people evaluate where they are financially and put in place a roadmap to achieve their goals. I am currently in negotiations with management to become the Official Financial Advisor to CrossFit 913. Sportwise, I played football, wrestled and ran track through high school. Continued with football thru college and added rugby. Finally finished playing rugby when I hit 40.

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?I used to lift weights 3 times per week, and I usually ran 20-25 miles per week. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?I have buried that memory. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals?I wanted to lose some weight and get into some semblance of fitness. I would say have come along fairly well this year.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Much of each week I have significant muscular pain in many /most areas of my body due to lactic acid buildup. That makes walking the stairs at my office fun.Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?I was happy to put up 355 in the bench last year. Beat my previous best of 350 which I did 30 years ago in college. Each time I PR is a special memory. It is great to be improving my strength and fitness in my 50’s. I wish CrossFit had been around 30 years ago. Would have been interesting to see how I would have done in my prime. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?If you stick with it and put in the work, you will pleased with the results.Something you might not know about me is?I grew up in upstate New York and graduated from Cornell University. I really enjoy hunting and fishing.
