Athlete Spotlight - Doug Fiscella
When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?I started almost 4 years ago. I was doing TRX training and was complaining to the trainer that it wasn’t giving me the workout I wanted. Luckily CF913 was going to start offering classes in the gym and she told me it was exactly what I was looking for so I gave it a try. After my first CrossFit class I immediately realized that this was what I was looking for. What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?My favorite is Randy (75x75# power snatch) or handstand pushups. My least favorite is anything that takes more than 20 minutes. What is your favorite/least favorite movement?I don’t like heavy squats. Actually, I dislike all heavy lifts.I don’t really have a favorite because anything that isn’t too heavy is ok with me.Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)Married to Ginny for 24 years. Two girls, Molly-17 and Caroline-20. I like to play golf in my spare time.
What was your workout routine before CrossFit?I was fat with a sore back. Years of sitting around caught up with me. After I decided to try and get in shape again I started TRX for about 2 monthts and then found CrossFit and have not looked back since. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?I loved it because I was actually sweating and was out of breath. I liked the fact that I could have a set workout that pushed my limits. Also, I like having coaches tell me what to do. I was never a go to the gym and figure out my own workout kind of guy. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved those goals? My two goals were to lose some weight and for my back to stop hurting. I accomplished both of those so I am very happy with CF913.Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Working out at CF913 allows me to be a little lenient with my diet. I generally eat healthy foods, but I won’t skip something I really want that is “unhealthy” for me because I know I’ll be able to work off those extra calories. Plus I can enjoy a glass or two of bourbon without any guilt.Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?I was really happy with finishing this year’s CrossFit Open 124th out of 5300 for my age group. As long as that bourbon is being poured, that’s about as good as I’m going to get. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Find that place just outside your comfort zone and strive to get your workouts there. That little extra will payoff in the end.Something you might not know about me is?I’m on an unofficial journey to taste every gin and bourbon in the US.
