October Male Athlete Spotlight - Chris Purvis

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?November 2015, my wife went once thinking it was her new thing, came home not able to walk, and said “this is what we are doing now.”What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?Anything quick and heavy, sub-5 min I LOVE. EMOMs, on the other hand, were put on this earth to remind us that some things are dumb and serve no purpose for anyone ever in any way. Just DUMB. What is your favorite/least favorite movement?Squats are fun just because the bar is so loaded up with weights, but my favorite is snatch. I think I love how technical the movement is. You know you’re strong enough to lift it, but if you’re out of position you’re unlikely going to be able to power it up. Least favorite is thrusters. I think they should remove thrusters for people 6' +. Maybe cut the reps in half? It takes me so long to complete 1 thruster, it’s demoralizing watching people moving at the same speed being done in half the time.

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)Most everyone knows my wife Jenni. We have two girls, Lydia and Elizabeth, ages 7 and 4. Much like Andy's mom I have a Realtors license, and run our 3 rental properties. I'm also in charge of keeping our house standing while Jenni makes me my money. I'm a pretty active outdoorsman; I fish and hunt as often as I can. What was your workout routine before CrossFit?Jenni and I did the old go to Lifetime deal. I didn't work out as a kid so really had no idea what I was doing. I would do some cardio, then head over to the machines and end up hurting myself (poor form). So then no choice but back to doing cardio until I felt better, then go hurt myself again; rinse and repeat. I never really got fitter, occasionally, when I did a ton of cardio, I would lose a little weight on the scale but never really looked different. I was hovering pretty steady at 240lb. With CrossFit, the difference was night and day. After about 2 months, the weight just dropped off of me while I built muscle. My body composition changed drastically and I lost a size in all my clothes. I did eventually get under 220lbs, but without losing much definition, then came back up to 230 which is where I’m at currently. So saying ‘oh I did CrossFit and lost 10lbs’ is very misleading. If I had to guess, I’d say I lost more like 30lbs of fat and gained 20 in muscle. That's a big difference in appearance. I also used to take a heavy dose of NSAID's for arthritis, which I no longer need after learning how to move and getting stronger. What did you think after your first CrossFit workout? My first reaction was “HAHA!” I liked the ass kicking but all the coaches apparently agreed that there was no way I was coming back or going to stick with it. Thanks B & TJ!!

What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals?Nothing really set like ‘achieve X’, but just wanted to get stronger and lose some weight. I look better than I thought I would ever be able to look. CrossFit has by far exceeded my expectations. What has truly surprised me though, and the thing I wouldn't even have said was lacking in my life, is the community I get from 913. I truly feel at home and it's so awesome to get to hang out with good friends for longer than I care to mention every day. I would stay at 913 for the workouts, but the community has made it so that there is no way I could leave the gym now! Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Just in the ways you would expect being more fit do. Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?Any time you are able to do a new gymnastic move it feels like you’re a superhero. I really enjoy the competitions with my partner in crime. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?I would caution to not try and feel intimidated by anyone else's fitness level. Most athletes at the gym that I know respect effort way more than they do a heavier number or a quicker time. You can tell when someone is in that dark place and isn't giving up. That inspires everyone else to put forth that same level of effort to let you know you’re not alone. I have seen every coach at some point in time on the floor dying for a breath of air. Something you might not know about me is?Jenni is my first wife. Most think she's the trophy wife you get as your second.
