When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started? I started in August of 2015. My husband had been doing Crossfit for almost a year and kept telling me to try it. I was hesitant but finally caved and never looked back. I think he knew my competitive nature would love it!What is your favorite/least favorite WOD?I love quick body weight workouts. Anything short and sweet. My least favorite would probably be that silly 80 calories for time on the AB. No thank you! I also hate WODs with wall balls! For some reason I can’t push myself on that movement! What is your favorite/least favorite movement?Cleans or gymnastics movements are my favorite. I used to love all the “fun” things like muscle ups, pull ups, T2B and handstand pushups! I had rotator cuff surgery about 10 months ago and I have definitely had to learn to listen to my body and change the way I workout! So now the movements and WODs I used to love, I now hate! And by hate I really mean I have frustration and limitations that I am not able to do what I used to be able to do!Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.)I have been married for 12 years to my wonderful husband, Justin, who I get to thank for my Crossfit addiction. We have 2 boys, Sam - 10 and Jake - 8. We have one dog - Charlie - 3. Our boys keep us very busy with zero breaks from sports. I have lived in the Kansas City area for 16 years with a 2 year break when we lived in Houston, Texas. We are big sports fans, especially the Wildcats! We have season football tickets and attend as many games as we can. We love the outdoors, camping and hiking, anything active!I worked for Accenture up until Sam was one year old. The travel and work demands weren’t what we envisioned for our family! We took a leap of faith and I quit my job to stay home with my boys. I now work part-time from home doing some IT/project management consulting.I loved sports growing up! My dad threw me into just about every sport. I played golf and softball in high school and grew up doing gymnastics!
What was your workout routine before CrossFit?I did any and every group training class at Lifetime and other gyms in town. Never really challenged me too much! What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?I could not lift my arms for an entire week. We did pull ups in my first workout and I might have gone a little overboard. A week went by and Brady followed up with me to see what I thought of the gym and Crossfit. I think he thought I didn’t like it. I was just waiting to be able to use my arms again and then I signed up immediately. What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Have you achieved any of those goals?Get in great shape, feel challenged and become stronger. I knew nothing about any of the weightlifting movements we do. I definitely had a lot to learn and can say I have never been in better shape. I continue to work on my form and I know there is still so much to learn!Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?Absolutely! I have a better understanding of my body and have changed my diet significantly! The first Lurong challenge had the biggest impact on my diet. I am so thankful for the friends I have met along the way. I can’t imagine not knowing the amazing friends I have met and the 913 community.
Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?Maybe being a second or third choice for an alternate on the regional team! Things would have gone very different had they needed me! Kidding! I have done 2 competitions and definitely loved competing and pushing myself in that setting. I did one with my husband, which was very cool for many reasons. What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit 913?Take it all in! Enjoy the community and ask questions too, everyone is so helpful! Learn from your fellow athletes and coaches! And if you can’t move your arms after the first workout, don’t worry about it, its normal!
Something you might not know about me is?I wanted a dog growing up, but my dad was a mailman and that was out of the question. I had a variety of other pets, frog, fish, rabbit, hamster to name a few. My most memorable was probably my pet chicken, Sally Sally dot dot dot. We didn’t even live on a farm, so I am not sure how my parents pulled that one off.
